TWO YOUNG local men were sentenced yesterday to jail and whipping after they pleaded guilty earlier before the Bandar Seri Begawan Intermediate Court on charges of auto theft and mischief by burning the car. Twenty-four-year-old Ak Hj Radiman bin Pg Rahiman received two years and six months imprisonment with six strokes of the cane, while 26-year-old Mohd Taqiyuddin bin Awg Taha received twelve months imprisonment only as he did not participate in setting the car on fire. The defendants jointly stole the car parked near a basketball court at Kg Baru, Seria, during the early hours on January 17, 2013. The defendants and their friends were just driving around the neighbourhood when they eventually stopped there, with both defendants deciding to pull out different car keys in their possession and eventually succeeding in unlocking the car door and starting the engine. Ak Hj Radiman drove the stolen car and Mohd Taqiyuddin sat in the passenger seat while the other friends drove off in their car. The car was repainted in a different colour after it was stolen. Some time between January 17 and 20, 2013, Ak Hj Radiman drove the stolen car while Mohd Taqiyuddin drove in another car and both of them drove towards Jalan Andulau in Labi. Ak Hj Radiman stopped along the Jalan Andulau roadside while Mohd Taqiyuddin drove past and made a U-turn about 100 metres away. This was when Ak Hj Radiman set the car on fire using engine oil and fled the scene with Mohd Taqiyuddin. DPP Didi Latiff prosecuted the case. © 2013 Borneo Bulletin Online |
