Court orders that undergraduate be flogged for theft

Arowolo Victor was given six strokes of the cane for allegedly stealing a mobile phone

A student of the University of Ado-Ekiti was on Tuesday ordered by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates' court to be given six strokes of the cane for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from one Hassan Seun, a colleague.

The incident happened at the university premises where the accused allegedly attacked Seun and stole his Nokia mobile phone, valued at N15,000.

The accused, Arowolo Victor, was arraigned on a one count charge of stealing.

Police Prosecutor, Ewuola Ebenezer, told the court that the accused had on July 23 at 10 a.m. attacked the victim and stole his phone.

He said the offence was punishable under Section 390 (A) of the criminal code, cap 30, volume 2, laws of Ondo-State as applicable to Ekiti.

The magistrate, Mrs C Adegoke, ordered that the prosecutor should give the accused six strokes of the cane and adjourned the case till August 4 for further hearing.

Ex-Convict Bags 3-year-Jail Term For Stealing

An 18-year-old ex-convict, Segun Oladosu, was last Monday sentenced to a three-year imprisonment for stealing.

Oladosu, who was arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate's Court, according to the charge sheet, stole some alcoholic drinks, valued N9,000, cigarettes valued N1, 000, one T-shirt valued at N1,500 and one G.Tel telephone handset valued N5,000, all totaling N16,500.

The convict was said to have burgled the shop of one Olatunji Theresa in order to steal the items.

The offence was committed on July 23, 2011 at Aladejobi area, Gbaemu, Osogbo, Osun State.

Stealing and burglary were offence contrary to and punishable under sections 516, 313(1), and 390(9) of the criminal code cap 34 vol. ii laws of Osun State 2033.

When the charge sheet was read to him in the dock, Oladosu, who dressed in a black-T-shirt and a jean trousers, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of stealing and burglary leveled against him.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Solomon Oladele, tendered the statement of the convict, which he made in the police station, and other stolen items recovered as exhibits before the court.

Admitting the statement, Oladosu said, he was taught how to steal by his scavenger friends and that they had broken into some other shops before he was caught.

The police prosecutor said the convict had been arraigned up to five times at magistrate courts II and III for similar offences.

Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Adewumi Makanjuola, found Oladosu guilty, saying that he (convict) had taken stealing as his profession.

Makanjuola however, sentenced Oladosu to three calendar years imprisonment with hard labour, and ordered that the convict be given 10 strokes of the cane at the scene of the crime in the presence of his parents and the complainant.

He added that the strokes of the cane should continue on monthly basis till he shows some signs of remorse in his behaviour.

Makanjoula ordered that the recovered items should be released to the rightful owner in 30 days, if there is no appeal against the judgement.
