The convicts, Dahiru Mamman of Hanga village and Mohammed
Musbahu of Kandaka village all in Niger, were convicted for
stealing six goats belonging to one Alto Iliyasu in Mai'adua
local government area of the state.
Delivering judgment, Khadi Bala Salisu said the sentence
followed the court's conviction beyond reasonable doubt that the
accused persons committed the offence contrary to section 135
(12) of the state penal code.
He said the court, having found them guilty of the offence,
sentenced them to six months imprisonment without option of fine
and also ordered them to receive 10 strokes of the cane each.
The prosecutor, Police Constable Sanusi Hamza, had earlier
told the court that the principal suspect, Mamman was arrested
together with his accomplice, Musbahu early this month.
He said the arrest followed a report to the police by Iliyasu
and two others whose goats were stolen.
He said the complainants had accused the two suspects of
stealing six goats, five of which were discovered with Musbahu
who had already slaughtered one.
The prosecutor further told the court that Mamman had, during
interrogation, confessed to have stolen the goats from Daura and
taken them to Musbahu's house. (NAN).
