Mat Solo gets 10 years' jail and rotan for robbery
By Chin Fah Shin
MALACCA, Fri. -- Jantan bin Abdul Rahman alias Mat Solo was sentenced to 10 years' jail and ordered to be given six strokes of the rotan for armed robbery.
He pleaded guilty to robbing bus company manager Chau Pin Nang and his family on Nov. 14 last year and also admitted to three other charges pending against him.
When Jantan, 27, asked the court not to order the caning as he was not well, Sessions Court president Abu Hashim bin Haji Abu Bakar said:
"This is the only way to deter you. The trouble with you is that you are reckless and people become frightened of you."
He was limping from a gunshot wound in his thigh, sustained when he resisted arrest at Bukit Rambai, six days after the robbery.
Jantan, also known as Mat Botak, had seven previous convictions and is serving two years at the Pudu Prison for escaping from police custody on Jan. 6.
7 convictions
Jantan robbed Chau and his family of a shotgun and 68 rounds of ammunition, $100, three gold brooches and a jacket at their house in Bukit Hantu.
Chief Insp. Mrs. E. Koshy said Chau, 58, and his family were having dinner when Jantan suddenly appeared at the kitchen door with a parang in his right hand and a stone in the other.
He locked them in a room and ransacked the house.
"Then he asked Chau's wife to make him coffee. He remained until 2 a.m. and drove off in Chau's car," Mrs. Koshy said.
Jantan agreed that the three charges pending against him be taken into consideration for sentence after an application by Mrs. Koshy.
He admitted robbing a woman Lee Niew, of a gold chain and outraging her modesty at Sebarang Gajah in Bukit Rambai on Nov. 9.
He also admitted threatening one Lee Chok alias Lee Kim Wah with a parang at an estate at Sebarang Gajah on Aug. 12 last year.
