Court flogs driver for stealing TV, iPad

An Abuja Grade 1 Area Court sitting in Kubwa has ordered that a 26-year-old driver be given six strokes of the cane for stealing a television set, an iPad tablet computer and some mobile phones at Kubwa.
The presiding Judge, Mohammed Marafa, also sentenced the accused to six months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to charges against him.
Shamsudeen Ahmed of Kado estate was convicted for joint act, house breaking and theft, offences that contradict sections 79, 349 and 288 of the penal code.
The Police Prosecutor, Kelechi Echendu, told the court that one Abubakar Assadiq, and two others, all of Kubwa FCDA extension, reported at Dutsen Alhaji Police Station, of how the accused, and one Black, now at large, on same date, conspired and broke into their various apartments.
He said they stole their three plasma television sets, one iPad and two cell phones.
According to the prosecutor, the stolen items were, however, recovered from the convict during investigation.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty, and the judge, Mohammed Marafa, sentenced him to six months' imprisonment with an option to pay N6,000 as fine and also to be given six strokes of the cane.
