TAWAU: The Sessions Court today sentenced a teenage boy to 16 years jail and 10 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to two counts of armed gang robbery here last month. Judge Amelati Parnell handed down the sentence on Hendra Junaidi, 19, and ordered that he serve the sentence from his date of arrest on Nov 30. The court sentenced Hendra to seven years jail and five strokes of the cane for armed gang robbery with four others, two of them still at large, at a 24-hour convenience store in Taman Bintang on Nov 23. The robbers had taken, among others, a cash register with the money and three mobile telephones. It sentenced him to nine years jail and five strokes of the cane for robbing a man of Rm3,500 on Nov 19 with two others, namely Darwis Damos, 26, and Mohd Syukur Abdul Halim, 20, both of whom were sentenced to seven years jail and five strokes of the cane each. KUCHING: A Sessions Court yesterday sentenced a teenager to 240 hours of community service and seven strokes of the cane for raping an underage girl. Nur Ikmar Shafiq Abdullah, 18, was convicted of statutory rape and is an offence listed under Section 376 (1) of he Penal Code. He raped the 15-year-old girl at a village in Kota Samarahan between January and February this year. In August, the girl's father suspected something amiss after noticing that his daughter's abdomen was bigger than usual. When he sent her to a clinic in Kota Samarahan the girl was found to be pregnant. Police arrested the accused at a house in Kota Samarahan about 6pm on Sept 2. KENINGAU: The Magistrate's Court has imposed sentence of eight to ten strokes of light rattan cane to ten juvenile offenders who escaped from the Henry Gurney School here on October 19 this year. Two of the juvenile offenders will each receive ten strokes of a light rattan cane under Section 379A of the Penal Code and eight other juvenile offenders will be whipped eight times under Section 224 of the Penal Code, in the sentences meted out by Magistrate Norhamizah Shaifuddin on Thursday. The sentences are to be effected on January 23, 2014 at the Magistrate's Court here.
