Man gets jail and rotan for attempt to rob, injure mechanic and wife
KUCHING: A labourer was yesterday sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment and six strokes of the rotan for attempting to rob and injure a mechanic and his wife early last month.
Mohamad Azizi Pon, 25, from Kampung Tanjung Bundong in Kota Samarahan pleaded guilty before Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad who convicted him under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, and Section 326 under the same act for causing grievous hurt.
Azizi committed these offences in a motorcycle workshop at Kampung Tambirat in Asajaya between 3.20am and 4am on Oct 11.
He was also sentenced to another 10 years' jail for causing grievous hurt using a butcher's knife on the owner of the workshop identified as Jong, 31, at the same place and date.
The two jail terms run concurrently, meaning he would only spend 15 years in prison.
Victim Jong was present in court with his wife who was also threatened in the robbery. He said the incident had traumatised his family members.
The brief facts of the case stated that Azizi broke into the workshop with a few persons still at large. They gained entry by cutting the zinc wall at night when the family was asleep.
Jong said his wife went out from their bedroom but bumped into Azizi who was holding a butcher's knife.
Hearing the commotion, Jong went out and in the scuffle to stop the man entering his bedroom out of fear for the safety of his three-year-old son, he was slashed on the face, hand and body.
His family members sent him to hospital.
Azizi went to a clinic in Samarahan that night to seek treatment as he was also injured.
The doctor referred him to Sarawak General Hospital as he sensed something was not right. Police arrested Azizi while he was in hospital.
Last Friday, Azizi was also sentenced to five years and 10 months' imprisonment for causing grievous hurt to a fellow villager.
This jail term is to run consecutively with the earlier 15 years' jail term.

Youth gets 4 years, 5 strokes for statutory rape

KUCHING: The parents of a youth broke down and cried in a Sessions Court here yesterday when their son was sentenced to four years' jail and five strokes of the rotan for statutory rape of his underage girlfriend.
The 18-year-old pleaded guilty but appeared calm.
He shed tears occasionally after judgment was delivered by Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong who convicted him under Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code.
The section provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping.
The accused admitted to having sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old girl at an unnumbered house in a village at Kota Samarahan at midnight of Nov 26 last year.
The brief facts of the case stated that the accused brought the victim to a hut near a village in Kota Samarahan and forced her to have sexual intercourse.
It was learnt that they were boyfriend and girlfriend and it was not their first time having sex.
The girl, a minor at 14, got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl some time in August this year. The DNA test proved that the accused is the father of the baby.
DPP Nur Nisla Abd Latif prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
