Juvenile to be caned
A 17-year-old Mbare boy will receive four cane strokes after a Harare magistrate yesterday found him guilty of stealing 200 metres of telecommunication cables worth $9 million.
The court heard that at around 7am on May 27 this year, the juvenile allegedly stole the copper cables in Tynwald South from Muvengwa Muyendesi, a TelOne employee, and packed them into a cardboard box before walking away along the Chinhoyi-Harare railway line.
Two police officers on patrol in the area confronted him and questioned him.
The juvenile claimed the box contained bars of soap but upon checking the officers found the cables, and immediately arrested him.
He was taken to Dzivarasekwa Police Station where he admitted to stealing the cables.
Magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabhini ordered the juvenile to be canned [sic] by an officer at Harare Remand Prison and ordered the State to return the cables to TelOne. -- HR.
