District 2 Board Okays Corporal Punishment Policy
By Jean Lawrimore
District 2 Information Office(extract)
By a unanimous vote, the Sumter School District 2 Board of Trustees Tuesday night adopted a corporal punishment policy to be implemented beginning with the second semester of the current school term.
The policy states that corporal punishment, or paddling, will be administered only by a school's principal or assistant principal and not by teachers or other school staff.
Punishment must be administered in the presence of a witness and be used only as a last resort measure at the discretion of the principal.
The policy also provides for a standardized paddle, one of which will be issued to each school by the District office, and belts or other instruments may not be used to inflict punishment.
