A Spencer-Sharples high school counselor and an S-S school board member have been charged with assault and battery in the alleged beating of a student with a rubber hose. Zackary Redden, counselor in the high school at Ewing and Blum Streets, Toledo, and James Banks, board member, are charged with beating Kenneth Beverly, 16, of RD 3, Swanton, last Friday as a disciplinary measure. Warrant IssuedThe boy's mother, Mrs. Verla Beverly, brought the charge in a warrant. The warrant hasn't been served because Mr. Banks and Mr. Redden agreed voluntarily to appear in Municipal Court tomorrow to answer the charge, according to Capt Norton H. Cassady, chief of the crime prevention bureau. Police reported that the Beverly boy was treated for an arm injury Friday in Maumee Valley Hospital and that another S-S student, David Butler, 14, of Frankfort Road, was treated in Toledo Hospital for contusions on the buttocks as a result of the alleged beating. Accused Of MisbehaviorPolice said the boys told them about half a dozen students were beaten by Mr. Redden with a rubber hose. They were accused of misbehavior in study hall, according to the officers. The Spencer-Sharples school board held two special meetings on the matter over the weekend, according to O.J. Woodard, board clerk. He said the first was to hear charges and the second was to hear rebuttals. Some action is expected at tomorrow night's regular board meeting, Mr. Woodward added. Mr. Banks and Mr. Redden were unavailable for comment. |
