Vanderbilt's Honor Society is Banned by the Chancellor
In his iris bed above is Chancellor James H. Kirkland of Vanderbilt University, the "Grand Old Man of Southern Education."
Chancellor Kirkland's anger was aroused by the pictures above and at right, showing initiations of the Owl Club. Above, one pledge is carried off by his new "brothers" while another lies exhausted.
Paddling of the pledges was a feature of the initiation. When Chancellor Kirkland saw these pictures he ordered that the club, which is the sophomore honorary society, be permanently dissolved.
