Golfer Sean O'Hair says he still loves father despite relationship strain

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Sean O'Hair has been reluctant to discuss his estranged father, Marc, who, during Sean's teenage years, motivated him through corporal punishment and grueling practice regimens.
"I guess my story is compelling, so people want to know about that stuff," O'Hair said on the eve of The Players Championship. "But to me, the past is the past.
"On the other hand, to be honest with you, there hasn't been a whole heck of a lot (else) to write about. It's not like I've won 10 golf tournaments in my four or five years on tour. This is only my third win."
That third victory came last weekend at the Quail Hollow Championship. O'Hair has five other top 10s this season, including a tie for 10th at the Masters and a second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Despite all the mental abuse his father subjected him to, O'Hair said he still loves him.
"Even though he was tough on me, I'm here because of a lot of the things he did," he said. "I think he made me tougher. The only thing I regret is the fact that we don't have a relationship. On the other hand, I have a beautiful family to take care of."
O'Hair, 26, has two young children and his wife, Jaclyn, is pregnant with a third due June 25 -- a week after the opening round of the U.S. Open.

Assault alleged after spanking
A mother claimed her son's babysitter's boyfriend assaulted her 11-year-old boy early in the evening May 3 at a home on Fire Creek Trail in Eagle River. The boy had been unruly and was disciplined by the boyfriend with a spanking. Corporal punishment by a caretaker is legal in Alaska, police said. Spanking, not beating, a child as a corrective action is considered reasonable. Police said the boyfriend's punishment was appropriate for the boy's behavior and did not charge him with assault.
