Letter of the Corpus Association (Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, 1998)Then and Now: 1648We start with perhaps one of the more well known incidents from the College's history. The recording of the last physical chastisement of an undergraduate in Corpus. This incident is recounted in Lamb's History, Bury's pamphlet distributed to new members of College and other published histories. It is usually given in it's [sic] Latin form from the College Order Book: Johannes Starke de malis moribus Collegio amovendus. Item Benton qui ab eo seductus est per Tutorem suum Mrum Johnson virgis castigandus. However the College Chapter Book gives a slightly different perspective in English. John Starke & John Benton censured for being in suspicious and lewd company. Each to make ye acknowledgement in ye Hall. Starke who was ye seducer to bee removed from ye Colledge by Mr Johnson his Tutour & Benton who was only seduced to bee whipped. (22 May 1648) Both John Starke and John Benton were allowed to proceed to their degrees despite this incident. |
