The Straits Times, Singapore, 12 February 1987, p.13Junior college boys caned for audio equipment theft
SEVEN students from the Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) were disciplined last month for stealing audio equipment from one of the college's lecture theatres. The principal of the ACJC in Dover Close East, Mr Wan Fook Weng, last night confirmed that the seven boys were punished by caning. Mr Wan said the police were informed after the theft of the audio equipment was reported to the college authorities in September last year. He declined further comment. A senior school teacher, who asked not to be named, told The Straits Times the boys took a microphone mixer, a tuner and the main control unit from a lecture theatre one afternoon.
They returned the equipment after they were found out the next morning. "We delayed taking disciplinary action as we had reported the incident to the police," he said. "The police later informed us that the matter could be settled within the college." The senior teacher said the boys were given the cane, between one and three strokes each, late last month, before the Lunar New Year. A 17-year-old student, who declined to be named, said "in-house thefts" were uncommon in the college. |
