Hammer attack: 2 brothers jailed
TWO Indonesian brothers were jailed yesterday for a series of street robberies last year, including one in which they bludgeoned a woman with a hammer.
Muhamad Solikin, 20, had hit her on the head, while Lutfi Subagio, 18, was the look-out.
The woman, left unconscious for an hour, was in hospital for five days. She had to be re-admitted later for another three days and now suffers from hearing loss.
Muhamad was jailed for six years and his brother, four years. Both received 12 strokes of the cane.

Fatal assault in void deck: 3 get jail, cane
By Elena Chong
THREE men who assaulted another man so brutally that he choked on his own blood and died were yesterday sentenced to three years in prison and six strokes of the cane each.
Herry Indra Putra Muhamad Noor, 32, Ismail Salim, 28, and Abdul Latiff Haji Hussainar, 39, had pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt in the July 21 attack last year on Mr Ng Hui Khiam, 34, in a void deck in Bukit Batok Street 21.
The three men had initially been accused of murder, but the charge was amended.
Pressing for a stiff sentence on Tuesday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Amarjit Singh cited the many aggravating factors in the case.
Mr Ng, who was jobless, had approached the three men in the void deck at about 4am to ask them to make less noise. That triggered the assault that led to his death.
Outnumbered three to one and unarmed, Mr Ng was set upon and took kicks and blows to his face and body even after he lay defenceless on the ground, said the DPP.
Blood was found spattered on a wall near the edge of a staircase landing and a 10m trail of blood was also found at the scene.
Abdul Latiff, then a freelance television repairman, had punched Mr Ng in the face, sending him reeling backwards. He fell and hit his head against the wall.
Abdul Latiff also stopped Mr Ng from getting up by stomping on his face twice. He followed this up with repeated kicks to the fallen man's face and body.
Herry, then an assistant cook, and odd-job labourer Ismail also joined in the assault. The former kicked Mr Ng a few times in the ribs while Ismail stomped on the victim and kicked him.
The DPP said that the autopsy showed severe trauma to the face, resulting in bleeding. The victim had choked on his own blood.
District Judge Bala Reddy, agreeing that a deterrent sentence was warranted, took into account the estimated six months that the three men had already spent in custody.
They could have each been jailed up to seven years and fined or caned for grievous hurt.
