Osun govt re-introduces corporal punishment in schools

By Gbenga Olarinoye

Osun State government has reintroduced corporal punishment to curb indiscipline by students, ranging from cult activities to anti-social vices in all the secondary schools in the state. The State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan who dropped this hint while briefing newsmen on the activities of his ministry for year 2007 stated that the state government was worried by the level at which students' discipline had degenerated in the state.

According to him, if drastic action was not taken on time the situation was getting to a stage at which students publicly insulted their teachers and often get away with it.

The commissioner disclosed that the government had discovered that most of the problems presently happening in tertiary institutions in the state today are as a result of lack of proper discipline of students while in secondary schools before their admission into tertiary institutions.
