Narrow escape for car robber
A MIDDLE-AGED car robber yesterday missed the gallows by a whisker when the chief magistrate's court reduced the charge from one under Hanging Act to imprisonment.
However the Senior Principal Magistrate, Mr J.B.N. Muturi sentenced Joseph Njenga Wainaina to 10 year imprisonment and to receive 10 strokes of the cane after being proved guilty of simple robbery.

Rasta kin, associates go to jail
A group of 11 alleged associates of most wanted criminal Bernard Matheri alia Rasta were yesterday acquitted of violent robbery charges for lack of evidence.
However four of them were jailed for four years with two strokes for preparing to commit a felony.
Nyahururu Principal Magistrate Wanjiru Karanja set free two of the accused for lack of evidence and deferred the sentence of the three others until a probation officer's report on them was received by the court.

10-year jail for aids man who raped
An HIV positive Siaya man who raped a 50-year-old married woman will serve a 10-year jail sentence and receive 13 strokes of the cane.
The sentence was passed yesterday on Peter Okello Ogutu. His co-accused, Eliud Sewe Okwapo, will get similar punishment. A third, John Obare Okwapo, died while in remand prison in Kodiago. He was also HIV positive.
