Two sentences were passed by the Jerusalem Military Court
yesterday, one of life imprisonment and 24 strokes of the birch,
and the other of imprisonment for a period of five years.
Awad Ahmed Ali El Hajazi, who stated that he was under 18 of
years age, received the first sentence after being found Guilty
of the murder of an Arab in Jaffa on February 3, and discharging
a firearm at a British Constable in that town on the same day.
The accused, who pleaded Not Guilty, was arrested some time after
the actual crime on March 10. A constable described how,
following the murder, he had pursued El Hajazi down the street,
and the accused turned and fired at him. The constable had then
opened fire, but his revolver jammed after firing a shot. He
afterwards recognised the accused and picked him out at an
identification parade on March 17.
The five years sentence was passed on Ali Farraja Farajalla of
the Sudan, described as a custodian for the arms of a gang at
Beit Dajan.
He pleaded Guilty to a charge of possession of six rifles, three
of them German and three English, and 461 rounds of ammunition.
