Subriso teachers boycott classes for assault on colleagues
Tepa (Ash), Jan 29, GNA - Primary and junior secondary schools
teachers at Subriso in the Ahafo-Ano North District of Ashanti,
have deserted classes following an assault on two of their
colleagues by some youths in the town.
A spokesperson for the teachers, who disclosed this to the Ghana
News Agency at Tepa, said when the school re-opened on Wednesday,
January 11, some of the pupils at the JSS did not attend school,
when they reported the following day, one of the teachers decided
to discipline them by flogging them six lashes each. He said a
form-three pupil among them reported the case to her brother
after receiving the canes. The brother then mobilized his friends
to go and assault the teachers.
One of the victims, Mr Ebenezer Adjei, who was beaten up,
sustained head injuries, whilst another teacher fled through the
bush to Abonsuaso about five kilometres for safety.
When the District Directorate of Education was contacted, an
officer who wanted to remain anonymous said the case has been
reported to the police and the District Security Council (DISEC),
adding that, the people in the town were found of harassing
teachers without any justification as the current case was the
fifth time in less than four years that teachers had been
assaulted.
He said the teachers have vowed not to return to classes unless
the GES, the DISEC and the opinion leaders in the town guaranteed
their safety.
