Local Youths Jailed, Caned For Theft And Vandalism

Kuala Belait - Four young locals pleaded guilty to committing theft and mischief at several houses in Kuala Belait before the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Yong Chi Fui received 20 months' jail with two strokes of the cane, while Mohammad Ezza bin Metali was jailed for 14 months with two strokes of the cane and Marali bin Bakar was sentenced to nine months' jail. Mohd Saiful Rizal bin Bujang was sentenced to six months' jail.

All four defendants admitted to a first charge of stealing three pieces of Quranic verses and a mobile phone from a house in Jalan Maulana on May 4.

A second charge stated that Mohammad Ezza and Marali stole some jewellery and a Gameboy from another house in the same area on February 26.

All four defendants had also stolen jewellery, a couple of knives and coins amounting to $40, the third charge stated. On the third count, Yong Chi Fui and Mohammad Ezza stole a gold ring and five CDs from a flat in Jalan Setia Negara on April 24.

Yong Chi Fui also faced a charge alone for stealing a gas cylinder from a house in Jalan Singa Menteri between April 16 and 17, last year.

The defendant also admitted to committing mischief by damaging nine pieces of tyres on April 11, 2004 in the vicinity of a barrack at Jalan Singa Menteri on April 11, 2004.

The last charge stated that Yong Chi Fui and Mohammad Ezza had committed mischief by damaging a glass window at a house in RPN Kg Pandan on February 10, this year which cost $150.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
