BruDirect.com, 5 January 2006Five Months Jail And Three Strokes For OverstayerBy Malai FadleyRizal Bandar Seri Begawan – The Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday sentenced a Bangladeshi to five months in jail and three strokes of caning for overstaying. Ibrahim Meah Bashir Ullah, 35, overstayed after his employment pass expired on June 24, 2004. He was arrested two days ago during an inspection by immigration personnel at the vegetable stalls in Kg Jangsak. Meanwhile, 35-year-old Indonesian Sukarsih was fined $500 or jail for a month in default for failing to produce her passport at the Kuala Lurah Immigration Control Post upon leaving the country for Limbang December 10, 2005. BruDirect.com, 8 January 2006Overstayer Gets Jail, CaningBy Malai FadleyRizal Bandar Seri Begawan – An Indonesian national, Albertus Nong Samson, 26, was sentenced to jail yesterday and given three strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to overstaying. The Bandar Magistrate's Court heard from Immigration Prosecuting Officer Moharefandi Hj Md Tahir that the defendant was arrested during a raid by police at a house at Spg 231 in Jalan Serasa, Muara on January S. BruDirect.com, 25 January 2006Local Man Gets Seven Years For Drug TraffickingBy Rol Ezam & Malai FadleyRizal Bandar Seri Begawan - A local man was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and seven strokes of the cane by the High Court yesterday after he was found guilty of trafficking drugs of more than 10 grammes of Methylamphetamine. The defendant, Samsi bin Hj Ahad, 39-year-old father of five, was convicted after trial of trafficking 13 grammes of the said drug. He was also convicted of consuming 'Syabu' and having in his possession utensils for consuming drugs. Judge Dato Paduka Steven Chong imposed a fine of B$1,500 with three months in jail in default, and a B$1,000 fine or two months respectively. BruDirect.com, 26 January 2006Foreigners Get Jail, Cane For Illegal EntryBy Malai FadleyRizal Bandar Seri Begawan - A 27-year-old Indian man was jailed five months and given three strokes of the cane for entering the country illegally, while another Indian national, 33, was sentenced to four months' jail and three strokes of the cane for the same offence. The court heard that Ramalinggam Govindaraj claimed he entered the country sometime in December 2002 using a passport. However, he failed to produce his passport during a recent raid and no Immigration records stated his arrival on the date he declared to have entered. He also told investigators that he had given his passport to a man named Ravi to process an extension on his stay and had never seen him since. Meanwhile, Mahalingam Darmaraj claimed to have given his passport to a man named Nasir and also never heard from him since.
