Former teacher gets jail, rotan
SIBU: A magistrates' court here yesterday sentenced former teacher Ikmal Hisyam Abdullah, 36, to a total of four years and five months in jail as well as four strokes of the rotan after he pleaded guilty to one charge of theft and four charges of dishonest misappropriation of property.
On July 21 around 9am, he stole a credit card belonging to his housemate Abdul Hakim Hussein, 34, in a building at Tun Abang Haji Openg Road.
For the offence, he was sentenced to seven months' jail.
Theft comes under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 10 years and a fine.
The four charges of dishonest misappropriation of property come under Section 403 of the same Code, which provides for between six months and five years in prison, caning and a fine.
For the first charge, Ikmal spent RM38 on Abdul Hakim's credit card on July 22 at 9.19pm at a Wong King Huo Road petrol station and was sentenced to six months' in prison and one stroke of the rotan.
Under the second charge Ikmal spent RM1,834 on a gold ring using Abdul Hakim's credit card on July 23 at 10.44am at a goldsmith shop in Sanyan Road and was sentenced to one year and six months in jail as well as one stroke of the rotan.
For the third charge, he spent RM347 to buy perfume using the same credit card on July 23 at 10.48am in Cause Way and received 10 months' jail and one stroke of the rotan.
Under the fourth charge he spent RM699 on a watch using the same credit card also on July 23 at 10.56am at a watch shop in Sanyan Road, and was sentenced to one year in prison and one stroke of the rotan.
All sentences took effect from yesterday and will run concurrently.
