Three jailed 14 years, whippings for robbery
By Anasathia Jenis
KUCHING: Three friends were sentenced to a total of 14 years behind bars and six strokes of whipping by a Sessions Court here after they were found guilty of committing gang robbery at a reflexology centre here last year.
Ibrahim Mohd Razali, 21, Mohd Taufik Sahat, 21, and Nazrul Ain Wahab, 23, failed to cast reasonable doubt after entering their defence before Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad.
They face three charges each under Section 395 of the Penal Code and were given 14 years in jail and two whippings for each charge.
The custodial sentences were however ordered to run concurrently and to take effect from the date of their remand -- Dec 5 last year.
They were found guilty for robbing a worker of the reflexology centre of her gold ring and a mobile phone and another worker of her gold ring, two mobile phones and RM500 in cash.
On April 1 DPP Poh Yih Tinn proved there was a prima facie case against the accused who were jointly charged for the offence.
Poh told the court yesterday that the accused should be given a deterrent sentence because such cases were rampant here. He also said the offence was serious and therefore public interest should be taken into account.

M370 theft: Mechanic gets jail, rotan
KUALA LUMPUR: A mechanic was sentenced to four years' jail and ordered three strokes of the rotan for stealing RM7,650 from the account of a passenger from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
Judge Norsharidah Awang sentenced Basheer Ahmad Maula Sahul Hameed (pix), 34, to serve the jail term from yesterday.
Basheer had, on April 28, pleaded guilty to four charges of using a debit and ATM card to withdraw RM7,650 from the account of Chinese national Tian Jun Wei.
The court earlier stood down proceedings to check the authenticity of a medical certificate produced by Basheer's wife, bank officer Nur Shila Kanan, 33, who was unable to attend court as she was suffering from diarrhoea.
Nur Shila is facing four counts of transferring RM40,000 belonging to Hue Pui Heng, a Malaysian, into the account of Chinese national, Tian Jun Wei; and RM35,000 into Ali Faran Khan's account, a Pakistani man.
She was also charged with four counts of falsifying documents, two counts of cheating and two counts of stealing RM2,530 from Chinese citizen Ju Kun and flight steward Tan Size Hiang.
She was charged on Aug 20 last year and the offences were allegedly committed at the HSBC Bank branch in Lebuh Ampang between May 14 and July 8 last year.
Basheer and Nur Shila had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges, but had, on April 18, changed their plea.
Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud prosecuted while the couple were unrepresented.
