THE Sumbawanga District Magistrate's Court has sentenced three
young men to serve each 30 years in jail and 12 strokes of the
cane after they were found guilty of armed robbery.
The Magistrate Mr Adamu Mwanjokolo told the court that he was
satisfied with the evidences tendered to the court by the
prosecution side led by Inspector of Police, Mr Emanuel Shan,
proving beyond reasonable doubts that the three convicts had
indeed committed the crime.
The three [sic] young men were Peter Pinus (18), Robert Rubeni (20),
Alex Mwakyusa (20) and Paul Joseph (18), all residents from
Bangwe area here in Municipality. However, all had earlier denied
the charges. Mr Shani claimed before the court that the trio
committed the crime on October 23 this year [sic] at
around 4:00 p.m. when they invaded the Watosha Guest House in
this municipality with machetes.
The court was further told that on that material day the trio,
armed with machetes, stormed into Watosha Guest House and made
away with more than 300,000/- in cash, property of the guests. On
delivery of the judgment, the trial magistrate told the court
that criminal activities in the district, mostly armed robberies,
were rife in the area, demanding a stern judgment to the accused
as a deterrent to potential armed robbers.
