Too much freedom

THE students of Tilak High School (THS) want corporal punishment to be reintroduced into schools in the new constitution.

Students of THS made a collective submission yesterday to the Constitution Commission at the Great Council of Chiefs complex in Suva which was presented by the deputy head boy Colin Powell and prefect Shazleen Dean.

"Students are given too much freedom without corporal punishment," Mr Powell said.

"We want to see children's rights minimised and corporal punishment allowed but to a certain limit. While we want this introduced back into school, teachers and principals should do so within a guideline provided."

In other submissions from THS, they called for more awareness programs on HIV/Aids to help minimise sexual problems that had risen to a significant number within young people. They also wanted to see a 30 percent women representation in the government, parliament, civil service and in management.

The collective submission was drawn up by students from Form Five to Seven who will qualify to vote in the next general elections. Last week, the school underwent a workshop funded by the United Nations Development Program on how to make submissions.
