Myanmar (Burma) - Caning for illegal deforestation.
This three-minute film was made in November 2015 in a Burmese jungle. It shows government (police or military) officers punishing half a dozen members of the Hmong tribe who have been caught illegally felling trees.
Deforestation is a major environmental problem in many parts of south-east Asia.
The miscreants are asked in turn to bend over the trunk of a fallen tree. They are then struck on the backside with a big two-handed stick. Most receive five strokes.
A man with a gun stands to the right, mostly out of view. He is evidently threatening to shoot if the offenders do not take their punishment meekly.
