1940s: FLETCHER'S CASTORIA CHILDREN'S LAXATIVE. Another young mother in fairly affluent circumstances. She loses her temper and spanks her toddler with a hairbrush. Afterwards she is full of remorse. Her very first words -- "I don't believe in spanking children" -- put her right outside mainstream public opinion. Perhaps this ad was designed specially for a notably liberal magazine. Or perhaps the copywriter was mistaking his or her own views for those of the public. NEXT PAGE: 1940s: Fletcher's Castoria Children's Laxative (again) |
