c.1960: HAVOLINE MOTOR OIL. This ad shows the pre-1962 design of the Havoline can. The boy has broken a window and now hides in the woodshed, awaiting the inevitable retribution from father, who is striding angrily into view, strap in hand, rolling up his sleeves. "A good time to insulate" indeed, so the son is hastily stuffing a book down the back of his shorts -- a humorous cliché more often associated with British schoolboys, but this is an American ad (Saturday Evening Post). This is one of those ads whose picture actually has nothing to do with the product, but is merely the vehicle for a play on words. NEXT PAGE: 1960s: European Cars |
