[Corporal punishment reintroduced in Ebonyi]
[...]
Meanwhile, corporal punishment has been re-introduced in primary and post-primary schools in Ebonyi.
The Commissioner for Education, Mr. Peter Ede, who announced this in Abakaliki after visiting some schools in Ebonyi and Abakaliki Local Government Areas, decried the level of indiscipline in schools and authorised the teachers to flog students who flouted school regulations.
Ede, however, said that only teachers were empowered to flog, stressing that "students should not cane their fellow students."
He urged teachers to show exemplary behaviour, "so as to have the moral justification to correct students if they are indisciplined."
The commissioner also urged teachers to be dedicated, stressing that the era when teachers abandoned their jobs for business ventures was over.
Model Comprehensive Girls Secondary School and Abakaliki High School were among the schools visited by the commissioner.
