Sharia Court Orders Woman to Receive 30 Lashes for Arson

-- An Upper Sharia court in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, has
ordered a housewife, Shafaiatu Tukur, to receive 30 strokes of
the cane and pay N8,000 fine for burning the home of her mate.
The court also gave Shafaiatu, 45, an option of five years
imprisonment.
The accused told the court that she decided to carry out the act
after all effort by her to make their husband change his
behaviour towards the other wife failed.
Delivering judgement last Friday, the judge, Malam Idris Usman,
ordered Shafaiatu to pay her mate, Saadatu Tukur, N69,950 as
compensation for the valuable items she lost in the incident.
Usman, however, advised housewives to always fear God because
they would be asked to give account for all their deeds after
death.

Carpenter Bags 30 Days for Theft

-- A Kaduna-based carpenter, Jeremiah Yahana, who came to Abuja
to forcefully open people's cars to steal items in them has been
nabbed by the police and sentenced to 30 days in prison by an
Abuja Magistrate Court.
He is also to receive six strokes of the cane having pleaded
guilty to a two-count charge of theft and being in possession of
fabricated keys contrary to sections 287 and 361 of the penal
code law.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector (Barrister) Francis
Irabor, the accused person of Z16, Ibadan Street by Gumel road
was arrested by the police attached to the Ministry of the
Federal Capital Territory (MFCT) on August 13, 2003 at about
11.35 am at the ministry's car park after he forcefully opened
the car door of a Volkswagen Passat vehicle with registration
number DB 188 ABC belonging to one Mr Ogike Chukwu Dobbre Anthony
of the administration department of the Ministry of the FCT.
The accused person who allegedly committed the offence with a
fabricated master key was said to have stolen a packet shirt from
the vehicle valued at about N2,500.
He was tried summarily by Magistrate Zainab Bashir under section
157 (1) of the criminal procedure code (CPC) having pleaded
guilty and was sentenced without an option of fine.
