Village Head, Tutor, Girlfriend Caned 240 Lashes

A traditional title holder, Sarkin Fulani of Jahun in Jigawa State, Abdulkadir Garba, on Monday received 80 strokes of the cane at a market square in Dutse for drunkenness.

Garba was on Thursday last week stripped of his title by the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, for being "a bad example to the people".

Garba was earlier convicted by an Upper Sharia Court in Dutse, finding him guilty of drunkenness, contrary to the provisions of the Sharia Act.

The convict, who was arrested by the Sharia police in Dutse, was earlier taken before the emir, who immediately stripped him of his title.

At the court presided over by Mallam Isa Gantsa, Garba pleaded guilty and appealed for leniency.

The court also ordered that a teacher, Abdulsalam Garba, at the Federal Government College Kiyawa in Jigawa, and his girlfriend, Ladi Muhammad, should be given 80 lashes each for being drunk.

The prosecuting police officer, Mallam Umar Adamu, told the court that the two were arrested last Thursday in Dutse, while drunk, a charge the two admitted before the court.
