Corpun file 8804 at www.corpun.com This Day, Lagos, 28 February 2002Man Gets 100 Strokes, One-Year Jail for SodomyBy Isha Ibrahim Maru The higher Sharia court, Kanwuri, Gusau, has convicted one Abdullahim Abubakar Barkeji to one hundred strokes of the cane in addition to one year imprisonment for committing sodomy. Passing the verdict, judge, Alkali Dahiru Muhammad Gusau said the convict was sentenced in this manner even though he had sexual knowledge of another man because of his being "Unmarried." Judge Dahiru Gusau stressed that the judgment was in accordance with the provision of section 131 of the Sharia penal code, and page 305 in the Kitabul Kawanimul Fikhiyya. He urged the convict to be of good behaviour after his jail term. In a related development, three persons have been sentenced to fifty (50) strokes each of the cane for wandering at night by the High Sharia Court of Dansadau. A statement signed by the court Registrar, Mallam Bala Zurmi, indicated that Yaro, Umar Garba and Hawa Yahaya were apprehended by the joint patrol team at one O'clock, Monday morning. The statement added that the Judge, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmad, passed the verdict based on the provision of section 155 of the State Islamic Sharia code and the confession of the suspect.
