Daily Nation, Nairobi, 27 May 1999Man, 35, jailed for theft in courtBy NATION CorrespondentsA 35-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail for pick-pocketing a woman as they waited in the dock for the hearing of their cases. Patrick Njuki Njoroge was convicted by Murang'a Principal Magistrate Felista Fatuma Wanjiku, who also ordered him to receive three strokes of the cane for stealing Sh1,060 from the woman. Njoroge was in court for the hearing of a case of attempted theft, before Ms J.B. Alukhoye. When the woman rose for the hearing of her case, she discovered that her purse was missing. A search was conducted and Njoroge was found with the purse. He was immediately charged before the principal magistrate. In passing sentence, the magistrate said: "The accused appears to be a habitual pick-pocket who should be kept away from other peace-loving Kenyans." Daily Nation, Nairobi, 28 May 1999Four men jailed for rapeBy NATION CorrespondentsFour men who raped a school girl were yesterday jailed for seven years with 10 strokes of the cane each. Passing the ruling, Eldoret Resident Magistrate, Mr Kipkemoi Ng'eno said their confinement in jail is hoped to protect the society from harm. The four, Joseph Kiplagat, Kipkurgat Kipkosgei, David Ng'etich and Eric Ng'etich raped the girl at Kaptik farm in Uasin Gishu District on November 27, 1998. The prosecutor said the offence was serious because of the prevalence of Aids. Said the magistrate; "In view of the health risks that the offence poses, I will give the convicted persons a heavy sentence each". The Prosecution was led by Inspector Joseph Ondoro while the accused were unrepresented. Copyright Nation Newspapers Limited |
