Daily Nation, Nairobi, 14 February 2001Death Orders For Teen RapistsNAIROBI -- Three people, two of them teenagers, were yesterday sentenced to death for rape and robbery. John Otieno Odhiambo, 20, Joseph Kibaki and David Ochieng, both aged 19, were also jailed for a total of 13 years by a Nairobi court, which also ordered that they receive three strokes of the cane each. They raped a woman on October 11, 1999, at the Baba Dogo bus terminus, Nairobi, and robbed her of Sh2,500. The court noted that the trio was preparing to kill the woman when police officers rescued her. The magistrate said the three were positively identified by the complainant in the case. The woman was walking towards he house with her cousin's son when they were accosted by five young men. The five, the court heard, ordered her to hand over every item she had but they dragged her to a nearby bush and raped her. One of them had a pistol and another a knife which was used to stab her on the left shoulder and the left hand. She told the court that Joseph Kibaki raped her as John Odhiambo held her. David Ochieng was then holding her bag. The three also stabbed Mr Irungu and pushed him into a pit. The two were saved by two police officers who arrived at the scene forcing the assailants to run away. Kibaki was caught while running away with his trousers down and he confirmed to the police that he was among the people who raped and robbed the complainants. Copyright 2001 The Daily Nation. |
