Cane for mischievous duo

The Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court has sentenced two youths to 12 months' imprisonment and four strokes of the rotan after they pleaded guilty to causing damage to government property.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Steven Chong were Keffle bin Abun @ Habun, 23 and Yusri Hj Awang, 23, who were jointly charged with four attempted theft, theft and mischief charges committed on May 24 and 26 this year.

According to Insp Rosli, Keffle and Yusri spotted some government electric cables placed by the roadside at Jalan Junjungan Lumapas on May 24 this year. Both of them peeled off the cable's insulator and damaged the cable. They also stole two pieces of cable which were 10 metres in length. The cable were sold for $1.50 per kilo and they managed to get B$86 from a buyer.

Two days later, Keffle and Yusri went to the same spot, intending to do the same. However, they were arrested by CID personnel on patrol as they were peeling off the cable's insulator.

The total damage was estimated at $1,570.
