PR Youth Jailed For Robbery With A Deadly Weapon
By Malai FadleyRizal & Rol Ezam
Bandar Seri Begawan -- A 21-year-old permanent resident was sent to jail for seven years and given 12 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to commit robbery armed with a deadly weapon before the High Court yesterday.
The defendant, identified as Hermaan, attempted to rob a 39-year-old female at tailor shop on the afternoon of June 7, this year while armed with a kitchen knife, Deputy Public Prosecutor said.
The defendant, who is unemployed, went to the said shop that day with the intention to steal.
He entered the shop through the front door and closed it behind him. The 39-year-old woman, who was attending the shop alone at that time, saw the defendant approaching her while pointing the kitchen knife in her direction.
The defendant then demanded money. The quick-witted woman excused herself by saying that she had to open the front door which would make her boss "angry" if it was shut.
The victim then pushed the defendant aside, ran out and yelled for help.
The defendant panicked and ran out through the back door of the shop. He climbed a fence to escape.
In his haste, the defendant dropped his wallet. The neighbour's maid saw the
defendant running away.
The defendant managed to escape but the owner of the shop alerted the police and Hermaah was eventually tracked down. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
