Two mechanics get 10 strokes of cane each for assaulting police officer

A Chief Magistrates' Court in Kaduna on Friday ordered that two mechanics, Aminu Isa and Mohammed Mustapha, be given 10 strokes of the cane each for assaulting a police officer.
Isa, 20, and Mustapha, 19, both residents of Ungwan Sanusi in Kaduna, were convicted for injuring a police officer, Sgt. Simon Moses, on the head.
The convicts had pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.
The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, said the punishment would serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.
Emmanuel warned them to desist from such crimes and face their jobs so that they would be useful to the society.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Chidi Leo, told the court that on May 29, at about 2.00 p.m. the mechanics assaulted and injured a police officer while he was performing his duty.
The offences contravened Sections 59, 67, 22 and 77 of the Penal Code, Laws of Kaduna State 2017.
