Welder gets 7 years, 3 strokes for raping student

GEORGE TOWN: A welder was sentenced to seven years jail and ordered to be given three strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here yesterday for raping a 15-year-old student.

M Retnam, 32, admitted before Judge Zulhazmi Abdullah to committing the offence in a forest near Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Pondok Upeh, Balik Pulau at 2.30 pm on March 1 last year.

According to the facts of the case, the victim was with a male friend when Retnam approached and misled them into believing that he was a policeman by producing a purported police authority card.

When the pair failed to produce their identity cards upon his request, he sent off the victim's friend to fetch his, after which he threatened the former with a knife and forced her to follow him on his motorbike towards the forest.
