To be caned or not be caned

Three men in their 20s who robbed a taxi driver in Suva earlier this month, might be punished by receiving a hiding.

Whether or not they will "get it" will be decided at the end of this month. In court today, the three said they were drunk when they hired the cab from Cunningham. Instead of paying the driver for his service at their final destination, they stole his car, taxi metre, mobile telephone and cash.

One accused has already opted to receive the caning instead of going to jail. He is worried that this will prohibit him from attending USP classes and fulfilling his scholarship needs.
