CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN NIGERIA

Video clips: School CP

With notes by C. Farrell

School caning and whipping in Nigeria: Two clips.

CLIP 1 OF 2

This 7-minute clip shows a thoroughly unsatisfactory mass punishment of young students in Nigeria, where CP is lawful and widespread. Many boys are dealt with, and at the end of the clip a much smaller number of girls. The teacher appears to be using a whip of some kind instead of a cane, and his technique is to say the least idiosyncratic: he has each recipient bend over towards him, and in most cases wields the whip vertically down the student's back, so that its business end makes approximate contact with the buttocks.

It seems likely that in these circumstances the small of the back is also being struck. This looks like careless randomness, an impression aggravated by the very rough way in which the teacher is manhandling his students, and which clearly does nothing to encourage them to keep still and take their punishment properly. Several of them writhe about in an attempt to escape the whip.

In one or two cases this stupid man even aims the whip at a student's head, which is unforgivable.

Altogether this is a chaotic and distressing scene. If teachers and school officials are going to administer corporal punishment, they should learn how to do it properly.

CLIP 2 OF 2

In 2012, a boy receives two strokes of the cane. This 20-second clip illustrates why the typical African method of just having the recipient lie down on the ground is so unsatisfactory, because he can easily twist round so that the strokes are not landing accurately in the correct place.
