Adultery - Man Gets 100 Strokes of Cane

The Katsina Sharia Court 3, yesterday sentenced one Mahmud Hamisu, 27, to one year imprisonment and 100 strokes of the cane for adultery.

Hamisu, from Abattoir area of Katsina metropolis, was arraigned following a suit filed by one Maryam Kabir of Tudun 'Yanlifidda area of the town.

Maryam had accused Hamisu, through a suit filed on Nov. 12, accusing him of impregnating her.

Delivering judgement, the presiding judge, Khadi Mustapha Saulawa said both the accused and the plaintiff confessed to the crime.

Saulawa said that their act was contrary to section 124 of the state sharia penal code.

He said the accused was therefore sentenced to one year imprisonment and 100 strokes of the cane.

He said that this is in accordance with section 125, subsection A of the state sharia penal code and Suratul Nur verse two of the Holy Quran.

The judge, however, said similar punishment would have been meted out to Maryam but for her state of mental health.

He cited some Hadiths to support why she would not be punished and discharged her accordingly.

The convict was promptly caned publicly and moved to the Katsina central prison.

Iron Thieves Get Flogging Or Jail Option From Court

By Usman a Bello

Two iron rods thieves were Tuesday sentenced by a magistrate to three months imprisonment or a fine option of N3000 as well as ten strokes of the cane.

The two thieves, Ali Muazu and Said Ibrahim, had pleaded guilty to stealing iron rods from a building without the owner's consent.

The prosecutor, Inspector Joseph Thaddeus, had earlier informed the court that Ali Muazu and Saidu Ibrahim trespassed into the said construction building at Wuse 11 and were caught stealing the iron rod by a police patrol team.

Both accused persons pleaded for leniency and called their action works of the devil.

While sentencing them, Magistrate Alkai Bashir ruled that the court had no option but to convict them to serve as a deterrent to them and others in similar act.
