Nigeria civil servants flogged under Sharia

A Sharia court in the northern Nigerian state of Sokoto has overseen the public flogging of two federal government employees found guilty of stealing the cash gratuity meant for an man who was about to retire.

The director of the Sokoto National Orientation Agency, Mohammed Jobi, and the agency's accountant, Issa Abdullahi, were given forty lashes each, fined ninety dollars and made to pay back the money they stole.

The two were supposed to authorise the gratuity payment of more than $1,500 to the retiring Nigerian government employee, but had kept the money for themselves. The pensioner then reported them to the Sokoto Sharia court which ordered their arrest and sentenced them.

Man to Get 100 Lashes for Attempted Rape

By Yakubu Musa Kano

A Sharia court in Dutse, Jigawa state has ordered that a 45-year old man, Yunusa Yargaba be given 100 strokes of the cane for illegal entry into a blind couple's matrimonial home and attempted rape.

Yargaba, according to the prosecutor of the case, entered the house of Ado Danjumai, a blind man in Davou village and attempted to rape his wife Haivana, also blind.

The prosecutor said that Yargaba entered the couple's room at night and approached the wife who later held him and alerted her husband.

Consequently the blind couple held Yargabu and raised an alarm which attracted neighbours who rushed to the area to give a helping hand.

Three persons testified before the court on the crime beside self confession of the convict.

In his judgment, the presiding judge Alhaji Ibrahim Gwaram, said he was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the accused person committed the offence and should be punished according to the Islamic injunctions.

He cited several verses of the Holy Quran and Hadithsthe of the holy prophet and ordered that Yaragaba be given 100 strokes of the cane in public.

Narrating his ordeal to newsmen shortly after the judgment Yaugaba said he was led to the couples house by the devil but thanked Allah that he was given commensurate punishment.
