Youth assaults magistrate

MALE, Aug 17 (HNS) -- An 18-year-old boy of Haa Dhaalu atoll Finey, who had illegitimate sex with a woman, who he can't marry under Islamic Law, has assaulted the magistrate and caused damage to the building and furniture when he was summoned to the court to be sentenced.

Finey court's Senior Magistrate Moosa Mohamed who was the victim of the assault said Wednesday that when the youth tried to attack he was held back by other staff of the office.

"He hit me. He even tried to damage the court building. Luckily the members of the office staff that was nearby held him back," the magistrate said and added that regardless of the youth's conduct in court he had been sentenced to five years banishment and 100 lashes.

The court said that government authorities have been informed about the matter.
