Habitual burglar given 6 lashes

A person accused of several robberies and burglaries who had been in jail from 1979 to 1995 was sentenced to get six lashes.

The person has been identified as Jayasinghe Pathirage (38).

Elpitiya Magistrate and Additional District Judge Mr. F.R. Fernandopulle said that those who are involved in destruction of crops and the like are given a lashing in addition to imprisonment.

The lashing was carried out after a medical report disclosed that the accused was hale and hearty.

The medical check-up was carried out by DMO Elpitiya Mr. Dayanda Jayasekera.
