Old photographs

In these various pictures, all apparently from around the turn of the 20th century, it is interesting to note the consistency of method. In every case the culprit has been tied, lying flat face down, to a low bench. His trousers have been lowered and the punishment is being administered to the bare buttocks with some kind of cane. It was apparently done in a public place, which is no doubt why so many photographs of these events survive.
