Car thief given five years and strokes

By NATION Correspondent

A man who stole a priest's car and fled to Tanzania was jailed for five years yesterday.

Mueke Said Mnene will also receive six strokes of the cane.

He was charged with stealing the Toyota Hilux vehicle worth Sh2.7 million from Father Patrick Nzau of Taveta Catholic Church at Kindira shopping centre.

The prosecutor, Inspector Jackson Kieti, told Taveta District Magistrate George Gogwe that soon after the car was reported stolen, it was involved in an accident in the Kilimanjaro area.

After the crash, the accused and another occupant, a Tanzanian, abandoned the car and tried to flee.

However, a Tanzanian police officer on patrol who had witnessed the incident gave chase and arrested the two.

The Tanzanian was charged at home and Mnene extradited to face the law in Kenya.

Tanzanian gets five years over weapons

By NATION Correspondent

A Tanzanian who was found with dangerous weapons has been jailed for five years and ordered to receive six strokes of the cane by a Taveta Court.

John Ramadhani will also be deported after completing his jail term where he is required to face another charge of invading a police post in Tanga and fleeing with seven guns.

He was convicted by the Taveta District Magistrate One, Mr George M. Gogwe.

The charge stated that on July 16, at Russia village in Taveta town, he was found at night in possession of a panga, a spotlight and a metal bar.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Jackson Kieti said the police on patrol saw the man and others who looked suspicious and when asked for their identities, they fled.

The police then gave chase and arrested Ramadhan but his accomplices disappeared.

He was taken to Taveta police where he was charged.

Ramadhan pleaded for mercy and said he was injured following a road accident.

However, the prosecution insisted that he be given a deterrent sentence to set an example to others.
