Thai Gets 3 Months, 3 Strokes Of Cane For Illegal Entry

By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan – A 31-year-old Thai national was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment and 3 strokes of the cane by the Bandar Magistrate's Court Saturday after he pleaded guilty to entering the country illegally.

Boonlert Kaw Ka Took was arrested by police personnel from the Kuala Belait Police Station at Jalan Rasau on February 24 this year.

The court heard that the defendant was sleeping at a bus stand in the area before he was arrested.

The Immigration prosecutor told the court yesterday that the defendant worked as a fisherman for a fishing company in Thailand. He ran away from his boat when it anchored in Sibu, Sarawak for refuelling.

The defendant walked on foot from Sibu to Miri for about 10 days and managed to cross the Sarawak/Brunei border without being noticed by the authorities. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

The vigilance of Immigration Enforcement officers paid off when they found a Bangladeshi national, Mizanur Rahman Golam Sarwar, hiding in a storeroom. Officers detained the immigration offender during a routine check on a building in Jalan Jerudong last Wednesday afternoon.

Mizanur was found when enforcement personnel were escorting another detainee back to the same building to collect his belongings.

The Bangladeshi national did not have any travel documents and further investigations revealed he had overstayed in the country for 385 days. Mizanur was prosecuted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment and three strokes of the cane.

Meanwhile, in another operation later in the evening, 15 individuals who could not produce any valid IDs or passports were apprehended for further investigation.

The operation, codenamed "BASMI 25/2006", involved 19 Immigration Enforcement officers and was led by Acting Head of Immigration Officers, Immigration Enforcement Section. The raid targeted several locations in Kg Mulaut, Kg Tanjong Bunut, Kg Pintu Malim and a building along Jalan Kumbang Pasang.
