Jail And Cane For Bangladeshi Who Assaulted, Robbed Woman

By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan -- A Bangladeshi was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane by the High Court Judge recently after he pleaded guilty to committing robbery of property belonging to a 39-year-old woman and causing hurt.

The defendant, Nuruddin bin Ahmid, 33, a building constructor, admitted to committing the offence on September 28 last year at a bus stop near Simpang 500, Jalan Kota Batu.

The court heard that the 39-year-old victim went to Jalan Kota Batu to search for her friend's house. However, when she reached there, she could not find the said house. She then decided to go back home. She went to a bus stop at the said Simpang to wait for a bus.

The defendant approached her and asked where she wanted to go. She replied she wanted to go to Bandar and was waiting for the bus.

The defendant then told her that he wanted to go to Sengkurong and had called a taxi. He then asked her if she would like to join him and share the taxi fare of $5 each.

The victim agreed and took out $5 from her handbag and gave it to the defendant. Not long after that, the defendant pulled her by the hair to a nearby junction. He then proceeded to strangle her neck and punch her face. He strangled her neck again several times until she fell into a drain. She tried to scream for help but could not do so as the defendant put his hand over her mouth. The victim begged the defendant not to hit her anymore and told him to just take all her things.

However, the defendant continued hitting the victim until she was unconscious. The defendant then took one digicam, two mobile phones, one gold necklace, one gold bracelet and cash amounting to $970.

According to the Deputy Public Prosecutor Dk Hjh Hana Molina, the victim regained consciousness a few hours later and was in pain. She later reported the incident to the police. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
