Three years, 3 strokes for two friends

Nasiruddin and Iskandar after sentencing

KUCHING: Two friends were each sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to be given three strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court here yesterday for robbing two foreign men.

Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman imposed the sentence on Mohd Nasiruddin Yusuf, 28, and Iskandar Putit, 27, after the accused persons admitted to have committed the offence.

The court convicted them to a charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same code.

They pleaded guilty to committing the offence last May 31 around 11am at Kuching Waterfront and robbing the victims of a mobile phone, RM10 cash and their passports.

The court was told that two Indonesian men lodged a police report after being robbed of their belongings.

The complainant Eriyanto said he and a friend Syaifuddin were sitting at the bench when two strangers approached them and demanded for their belongings.

Fearing for their safety, he said they surrendered the mobile phone and the accused also took away their passports.

Court to cane duo in exchange for shorter jail sentence

PEKAN NENAS: Two Indonesians, out of a group of 25 people who where caught trying to sneak out of the country illegally without proper documents asked the court to be caned in exchange for shorter jail time.

Sessions Court judge Salawati Djambri allowed their mitigation and sentenced Wawan Ghazali and Karmin Saudi, both 30, to three months imprisonment and ordered them to be give two strokes of the cane each.

For the other 17 suspects who were also arrested together with the duo without proper documents, each were sentenced to eight months imprisonment.

Salawati also sentenced six of the suspects in the group who had overstayed between three and 15 months imprisonment.

According to the facts of the case, the army arrested 25 suspects, 19 men and six women, who were aged between 23 and 29 at Ladang Tembikai in Kota Tinggi at 7.30am on May 31.
