Student receives six strokes of the cane for stealing sandals
A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, has ordered one Usman Yakubu, 19, to be given six strokes of the cane for stealing a pair of sandals.
Yakubu, a student, who lives at Kado Estate, Abuja, was arraigned on a one-count-charge of stealing.
The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, convicted Yakubu after pleading guilty to the charge.
Sadiq advised Yakubu to shun crime after receiving his punishment and warned him that if he was brought before the court for any crime again the sentence would be harsher.
Police prosecutor, Friday Idi, had told the court that the crime was reported at the Gwarinpa Police Station on March 9 by one Usman Abdullahi of Tipper Garage, Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja.
Idi said the accused entered the complainant's shop in Gwarinpa and stole the sandals valued at N4,000, when the owner went to the mosque for evening prayers.
